In living memory, sport has been a feature of Tockwith life since pre-war years. Football was played on the site of the present Sportsfield in the 1930's. Since then it has moved to various farmers fields in the village, finally settling once again in its present location.

Grass tennis courts established at Bilton Lane – (later doubling as bowling green). Tennis Club founded and played in local league. Football played on land behind Marston Road Play Area courtesy of Norfolk & Sturdy families. Goalposts erected and bullocks & their dung removed prior to Saturday kick-offs. Redundant tennis courts renovated and used for flat green bowling. Acquisition of current sportsfield site agreed for recreational facilities Fund raising starts in earnest. The Tockwith Appeal (see below) Purchase completed by Parish Council and Sportsfield Trust established. Preparation of land begins. Field levelled, tilled and seeded. Volunteers picked stones for several nights prior to seeding. Bowling Green built by volunteer members of Bowls Club to competition standard. Tockwith Bowls Club formed and new bowling green opened. Old bowling green developed as two grass tennis courts. Soccer goalposts and gangmowers purchased. Volunteers transport corrugated shed intact from Cromwell Court, Marston Road to Sportsfield to become Machinery Shed. Quite some feat of logistics! Second hand portacabin obtained and placed where clubhouse is today and used by bowls and football clubs. Major fundraising appeal to improve facilities and provide clubhouse. Chicken shed becomes clubhouse for Bowls Club. Portacabin dragged across to where floodlights are and becomes Football Club changing room. First Tractor purchased. Junior football club formed, playing on school pitch in local league. Present Clubhouse and car park built by local tradesmen and volunteers. All weather tennis court surface laid following major fundraise. First Floor of Clubhouse developed. Ceiling and kitchen installed using reclaimed units. Bowls Club annex added to clubhouse. Permanent floodlights erected. Junior football club reformed. New junior 11-a-side football pitch opened. New Machinery & Equipment Shed built. Major refurbishment of clubhouse and changing rooms New training/playing areas developed on Community Field. Additional floodlights installed. |
